| The final look of the yarn installation on my braidlocs |
First of all, My profuse apologies for the extremely long break in posting but a lot was going on in my life as besides the new locs I was blessed with a lovely bundle of joy; my daughter Natalie :-). So anyway, I got the locs put in and tthen took the time (about two weeks) to braid them in yarn working on and off. When I was finally done, I got a lot of people asking me if it was my hair or not, mostly because of the length and size of them which was a bit strange for dreadlocs. I suppose this means my plan did work, but we probably have a long way to go in Kenya concerning the sisterlocs, braidlocs etc or I just hang out with the wrong people as most did not understand me when I said I am never taking them out and will maintain them as locs.
So now with the current shortage in time for hair maintenance, I tried some shortcuts, including breaking the golden rule of never retightening thin locs by palm rolling or similar techniques because they may thin (gasp). I would say this went better than I had expected, because no locs fell out, and they looked super neat by the time I was done. Also it took me just three days working for about two hours each which is a big improvement from a whole week working for two to three hours each.
Of course I had relapses in which I fantasized cutting them off again and letting my hair grow out into an afro and restarting them yet again but mostly due to time I (luckily) did not come round to doing it. I would say that what I miss the most about having my own hair is the freedom to dye and was them at will because drying time is a nightmare, and also yarn tends to not curl so well in consecutive attempts after the first curl.I also miss the lightness in general but for the length I have and styling options now available, I am not too hang up on that...
I will continue retightening them with gel for the next three months and observe if there's anything to worry about because I feel as if the less I manipulate my hair the better state it will be in to take the gel so stay tuned as I will keep you updated on the progress I make in this way. As promised long ago, I will attach pictures of the process in this post up to the point I am currently at so feel free to ask any questions you may have, or comment on the same below. I will upload a few of them today and the rest next time as I have to find them first, so I hope you don't mind. 'Til next time, chao!
